Description

Chapter 1

Caylie Lyon takes in a deep breath. Without delay, the air escapes with a loud release as Caylie twirls her hair with her fingers. She’s sitting inside the Vanity Falls Savings Bank next to her husband, Nolan Lyon. They are outside the loan manager’s office waiting to conclude their paperwork on a loan for their new home. The Lyons moved to Vanity Falls, Maine two months ago for Nolan to take a position at the local university. Caylie looks at her watch for the third time in less than five minutes and sighs loud enough for Nolan to turn toward her.

“Nolan, we’re supposed to meet Bill and Sally tonight to celebrate our house closing, and I still have things to do. It’s almost two o’clock. What’s taking so long?”

Bill and Sally Tyland are good friends of Caylie and Nolan Lyon. They met, when in January, the Lyons moved from Morehead City, North Carolina, next door to the Tylands on Adams Street in Vanity Falls. The four of them have become the inseparable foursome during the last two months. All around town they’ve been sighted doing everything together: antiquing, dining, going to movies, and taking strolls.

“Caylie, it’s only been fifteen minutes. Calm down. I’m sure he’ll be out shortly,” Nolan responds in haste.

Caylie sighs again then diverts her eyes from her husband. Staring into the slits he’s peering through may make her say something sarcastic and start an argument. It seems that’s all they’ve been doing lately, arguing. Just as she’s looking toward the main entrance, she notices four men, dressed in all black, wearing ski masks, burst through the doors. She knows what this is. She’d seen something similar happen before back in North Carolina.

~ * ~

It happened last year in 2009 prior to their move to Maine. Caylie was in the grocery store late one summer night when she experienced a terrible, frightening ordeal. She normally didn’t shop at night, but she’d forgotten to get breakfast items for her guests, her adult children, Eve and Tyler, and Nolan’s parents who were all spending the Memorial Day weekend with them. She remembered strolling down an aisle when she heard gunshots and people screaming. She came to an abrupt halt; saw someone dressed all in black, his face covered, and pointing a gun toward her down the aisle from the front of the store. She froze as did the other two customers who were in front of her.

They were ordered to walk to the front, throw their phones into a pile of other phones, and lie on the floor face down. A male customer tried to be a hero and grab the gun from one of the masked men. The gun went off, shooting the man in the stomach. This only made things worse. Everyone was edgy including the crooks. One young blonde female’s phone started ringing and this made everyone jump. The robbers swiftly turned their weapons toward the ringing phone and one of their guns discharged.
