Luella Fisher stood next to the casket of her husband of over fifty years and greeted family and friends as they gave her their condolences. She smiled and accepted their words of sympathy as well as many hugs. She was glad she attended a church where people were so friendly and hugs abounded.
Inside she mourned the loss of her lifemate, lover, husband and best friend. She clearly remembered the day she and George Fisher met. She’d been in the Air Force for two years and because of her typing speed and accuracy, combined with the shorthand skills she’d honed to perfection at Oklahoma A&M, had been transferred to the Headquarters of the 18th Air Force at Donald Air Force Base in Greenville, South Carolina. Once there, she worked as secretary to many of the top officers at the base.

It had been a quiet Wednesday when George came to the office with some papers for her boss. At the time she didn’t give the chance encounter much thought, until George started coming every Wednesday and soon made excuses to come to her office on other days of the week as well.
“If I were to ask you out, would you go on a date with me?” he asked one Wednesday morning about a month after their first meeting.
“I don’t really know you, George, but I think going out could change things. I’d be delighted to go out with you.”
At the time she wondered why she ever accepted his invitation. Since joining the Air Force she’d concentrated on her career and even purchased a portable typewriter so she could practice her typing at home. Having a social life was the last thing on her mind. So what made George so different? She couldn’t put her finger on it, but he was special. In a way he reminded her of Adam Welter, the recruiter from her hometown who set her on the path that changed her life so drastically.
Within six months, they weremarried in a private ceremony conducted by the pastor of the church George attended every Sunday. His parents came out from Wisconsin, but she hadn’t even bothered to contact her parents to tell them of the special man who’d walked into her life. She’d kept in touch with her sister, Mary, but she’d been unable to make the trip as she was married and expecting her second child in as many years. With a baby under a year old and another one expected in six months, coming toWashington DC from her Minnesota home was impossible.
